The fertility decline

Conclusion

Choosing whether humanity will continue to grow

Fertility decline asks us to care for people living through an age structure that cannot quickly change while deciding whether that structure should deepen into permanent contraction. Adaptation is already necessary. Renewal remains possible.

The choice is urgent without being hopeless. The forces described in this book move slowly enough for institutions and culture to change, though every year becomes part of the inheritance. We begin with the demographic reality: much of the near future has already been born.
